Donald Trump's illegal immigration agenda gets setback from court

Washington: United States President Donald Trump's illegal immigrant agenda got setback from a court that barred the US Justice Department from denying public-safety grants to so-called sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions had threatened to withhold public safety grant money to Chicago and other so-called sanctuary cities for refusing to impose new tough immigration policies.

"It means essential resources for public safety will not come with unlawful strings attached, and the Trump justice department cannot continue to coerce us into violating and abandoning our values," Emanuel said.

Trump is eyeing tougher immigration measures and has pledged to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Trump, however, on Thursday expressed sympathy for those protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which offered young illegal immigrants an eventual path to permanent residency and citizenship.

The DACA programme had been established by executive order by President Barack Obama. On Sept. 5, Trump rescinded the program, and said the programme would be phased out in six months, unless Congress came up with a fix. Trump later adopted a softer tone toward the 800,000 immigrants protected by DACA, telling them not to worry about being deported.

Ambala man held for Rs 600-crore ponzi scam

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday arrested an agent of a Chandigarh-based company and seized assets worth Rs 4.18 crore in connection with its money laundering probe in a Rs 600-crore Ponzi scam.

The ED had conducted searches in Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ambala in Haryana, and Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh in this case on Friday.

A handful of complaints — four from tricity — had initiated the investigations into the scam, which is now being estimated to be worth Rs 600 crore.

Sources in the police said that in 2012 about four complaints were lodged for online fraud. The complaints had claimed to have lost Rs 50 lakh. They had later even moved the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking probe by a central agency.

The cyber cell was investigating the matter, following which an FIR was registered for cheating, forgery and under the Information Technology (IT) Act at the Sector-36 police station. Kamal K Bakshi was later declared a proclaimed offender.

“The cyber cell case was registered at our station,” said Sector-36 station house officer Naseeb Singh. “We have made formal arrest of the accused, who was a PO. He has been sent to judicial custody. Intimation about his arrest has been given to the cyber cell.”

CCEA gives in-principle approval for selling 51% stake in HPCL to ONGC

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Monday gave in-principle approval for sale of government's 51.11 percent stake along with management control in HPCL to ONGC, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has informed.

HPCL will continue as PSU after ONGC acquisition of stake, Pradhan added.

BPCL has a market cap of Rs 1,01,860.56 crore and buying government's 54.93 percent would alone have entailed an outgo of about 56,000 crore.

HPCL on the other hand has a market cap of Rs 58,485.55 crore and buying government's entire 51.11 percent stake would entail an outgo of Rs 29,900 crore.

There are only six major companies in the oil sector -- ONGC and Oil India Ltd being the oil producers, IOC, HPCL and BPCL in refinery business and GAIL in midstream gas transportation business.

The rest, such as ONGC Videsh, Chennai Petroleum Corp (CPCL), Numaligarh Refinery Ltd and MRPL, are already subsidiaries of one of these six PSUs.

HPCL will add 23.8 million tonnes of annual oil refining capacity to ONGC's portfolio, making it the third-largest refiner in the country after IOC and Reliance Industries.
